Graduate Teacher Programme

Outstanding - That's what OfSTED have awarded us for 2009

Wakefield Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) has been training teachers since 2002. It is an innovative and collaborative scheme between Wakefield schools and the Local Authority (LA). This dynamic relationship is embodied in the Partnership Agreement (PA) between schools and the Wakefield Partnership for Initial Teacher Training (WPITT). Competition for places is fierce, resulting in a high quality cadre of potential teachers for Wakefield schools.

GTP is an example of an Employment-Based Route (EBR) into teaching. EBRs are teacher-training programmes that allow trainees to work in a school and follow an individual training programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This programme suits mature, well-qualified people who can quickly take on teaching responsibilities and who need to earn a living while they train.

Following a successful OfSTED Inspection Wakefield became a fully accredited provider of Initial Teacher Training in August 2006 and is now able to Award QTS to successful candidates. WPITT is given an annual allocation of GTP places by the Training and Development Agency for schools (TDA). WPITT takes responsibility for designing and delivering the training programme. As part of this training programme, WPITT provides a wide range of training opportunities for WPITT partners and trainees.

More information on the GTP can be accessed on the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) www.tda.gov.uk/

Newly Qualified Teachers

Investing in New Teachers in Wakefield

Wakefield Local Authority (LA) believes the individuality of a newly qualified teacher needs to be recognised. Each new teacher brings a wealth of potential and professional experience which needs to be developed. Their enthusiasm and commitment to learning should be fostered. Newly qualified teachers (NQTs) have an entitlement to a well-structured and supportive induction programme and in return have a responsibility to adopt a professional, reflective and self-evaluative approach to their work.

Wakefield schools actively support the professional development of newly qualified teachers and the LA offers an exciting induction programme that will meet the needs and maximise the potential of every newly qualified teacher.

The Wakefield Induction programme offers:-
• An advance salary facility
• Full INSET programme
• Termly training opportunity for NQT tutor/mentors
• End of year conference
• Termly Welcome Meetings
• Comprehensive handbooks for NQTs, Headteachers and Induction Tutor/Mentors
• Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) for NQTs

Wakefield is one of very few Authorities that continue to offer a full core and complementary training programme for NQTs during their Induction year.
